*Swamp theme* is a color serigraph from 1955 by Dean Meeker, and its subject is a wetland landscape rather than a town or a historic event. Serigraphy, or silkscreen printing, builds an image through stencils, with each color pressed onto the paper through its own screen, which tends to produce flat, layered shapes. Many American artists adopted the method in the decades after the 1930s because it allowed small editions with rich color. Swamps had long recurred in American painting and printmaking, valued for their dense growth, reflective water, and sense of a landscape that resists settlement.
