Few places on the Lake Champlain corridor saw more military activity in the 1750s than Crown Point, the lakeside site on New York's northern frontier shown here from the south. The French had built Fort St. Frédéric on the point in the 1730s, and after British forces took the position in 1759, they set about raising a new fort and a large camp nearby. This drawing, dated 1760 and inscribed No. 43, uses gray wash with black and sepia ink, a technique common in military survey work of the period. Its careful, map-like view shows how the ground was arranged for a garrison during the Seven Years' War.
