Few places on the Atlantic coast look as bare as the dunes in this view, which shows a camp pitched among the naked sand hills at the east end of Sable Island, a low sandbar off Nova Scotia's southeast shore. Joseph F. W. DesBarres made it for *The Atlantic Neptune*, the large set of charts and coastal views he prepared for the Royal Navy and published in London between 1777 and 1781. The island was feared by sailors for its shipwrecks, and charts and views of its shifting shoreline had practical value for mariners. This print bears a publication date of June 1, 1781, when the American Revolution was still being fought and accurate knowledge of North Atlantic waters mattered to the navy.
