Few magazine illustrations of the 1870s turned to Black worship in the postwar South, and this wood engraving appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on August 10, 1872, on page 620. Sol Eytinge Jr. made the design, and its title places the scene at a camp meeting, the outdoor revival gatherings that were central to Southern religious life. Such meetings, often held in clearings or under brush arbors over several days, drew families from wide areas for preaching, singing, and fellowship.
