Harper's Magazine published this wood engraving, titled *Camp Meeting*, on page 531 of one of its bound volumes, bringing an outdoor revival into the pages of a widely read illustrated monthly. Camp meetings were multi-day religious gatherings, often held in woodland clearings, where families camped on the grounds and crowds came together for preaching and hymn singing, a practice especially associated with the revival movements of the early 1800s. Wood engraving was the standard method for periodical illustration of that era, and since the record gives no date, the scene is best read as a general picture of the tradition as magazine readers saw it.
