The drill ground and camp shown here are at New Bern, North Carolina, a coastal town that Union forces occupied in March 1862 during the early Civil War campaigns along the Carolina coast. These two views are reproductions of watercolor sketches made by Lt. Col. Cabot of the 44th Massachusetts Infantry, a regiment that served in the region. Sketches like these, made by officers in the field, offer a firsthand record of how occupying troops arranged their camps and drilled their men. The record gives no date for the originals, so the exact year of the sketches is uncertain.
