A winter hunting camp at Peck's Lake, about 21 miles north of Fort Verde in Arizona Territory, is the scene here, dated January 24, 1887. The photograph is credited to Edgar A. Mearns, an army surgeon and naturalist who was stationed at Fort Verde during these years. The caption card ties the camp to the cavalry, which fits the period, when soldiers from frontier posts often hunted for food and collected natural history specimens in the surrounding country. The details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
