The Pawnee Scouts, led by brothers Frank and Luther North, were among the most distinctive units the U.S. Army fielded on the Plains. The 1869 date in the title places these men in the years of their best-known campaigns, including the July fight at Summit Springs in Colorado Territory, where they helped defeat a band of Cheyenne. The c1926 date and the caption details are unverified and may reflect when the print was made or catalogued rather than when the photograph was taken. The Pawnee enlisted as scouts in part to fight their longtime enemies, the Sioux and Cheyenne, which gives the image a particular weight in the frontier history of the period.
