The caption card identifies this view as the old government buildings at Fort Scott, Kansas, which it says were erected in 1843. The fort was founded in the early 1840s on the Army's western frontier, and mounted dragoons were among the troops stationed there. This print is a retouched photomechanical copy, and the card gives no date for the original photograph, so the image is best read as a record of the buildings themselves. The fort's later role in the territorial conflicts of the 1850s makes the site a useful point of reference for that period.
