A steel engraving published under the Johnson, Fry & Co. imprint presents George Peabody, the Massachusetts-born merchant and banker who spent much of his career in London. Steel engraving allowed fine detail and was widely used for portraits of prominent men in the mid-19th century. By the 1860s Peabody was known for large philanthropic gifts, including housing for London's poor and support for educational and cultural institutions in Baltimore and in his native Massachusetts. The print dates from about 1867, only a couple of years before his death in London in 1869.
