David Lloyd George, the Welsh statesman who later became 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, is the subject of this portrait, which is held in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. The caption card gives no date, so the image's exact age is uncertain, but Lloyd George's career spanned roughly 1890 to 1945. He led Britain as prime minister from 1916 to 1922, guiding the country through the final stretch of the First World War and the postwar settlement at Versailles. Portraits of him from this era are often studied as records of how a wartime leader was presented to the public.
