This studio portrait shows Henry Wilder Keyes (1863-1938), whose name and lifespan are the only firm details the record preserves. It was made by Harris & Ewing, the Washington, D.C., studio that photographed a large share of the government officials, legislators, and public figures of the early twentieth century. The caption card dates the picture to about September 5, 1919, a period when Washington was adjusting to the end of World War I and the political debates that followed. Because the date is recorded on an unverified caption card, the exact occasion for the sitting is unknown, but the portrait reflects the formal conventions of studio photography in that era.
