A portrait of Henry Browne Blackwell, made by the Brady studio, shows a man who devoted much of his life to reform. An abolitionist before the Civil War, he later became a leading advocate for women's suffrage, co-founding the American Woman Suffrage Association with his wife, Lucy Stone, in 1869. The record gives no date for the print, so it is best read as a picture of a public figure rather than a fixed moment. His sister Elizabeth Blackwell, the physician, was among the best-known women of her era.
