A wood-engraved portrait of Henry Melvill appeared in the *Illustrated London News* on January 20, 1844, on page 48 of that week's issue. The paper had only begun in 1842 and was among the first weekly publications to use wood engravings for both news scenes and portraits of public figures, so its likenesses of clergymen and other notable men were a fresh feature for readers of the time. The record gives the sitter's dates as 1789 to 1871, but the identification is marked unverified, and the cataloguer noted a possible confusion with a Henry Melville who wrote a history of Van Diemen's Land, so researchers should confirm the sitter before relying on the name.
