Few American poets were as widely read in their own lifetimes as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and this wood engraving by T. Johnson shows him as the magazine's readers would have known him. It appeared in *The Century Magazine* in 1886, four years after Longfellow's death in 1882, when the periodical was running portraits and essays that kept interest in his work alive. Wood engraving was the standard way to reproduce such portraits in illustrated magazines of the period, which is why the image has the dense, carefully hatched texture typical of its time.
