Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian soldier who fought for Italian unification, is the subject of this engraving by D.J. Pound, a printmaker whose work circulated in the nineteenth century. Garibaldi (1807-1882) led volunteer forces, known as the Redshirts, in campaigns that helped bring much of the Italian peninsula under one kingdom in the 1860s, and his name became a symbol of popular nationalism across Europe and the Americas. Because the caption card gives no date, the exact year of the print is uncertain, but portraits like this one were commonly made to satisfy public interest in his campaigns.
