This portrait shows Henry Dearborn, a Massachusetts-born officer who rose from a Revolutionary War captain to a senior commander and later became a public official. He marched with Benedict Arnold's expedition against Quebec in 1775 and served under Gen. Horatio Gates at Saratoga. Thomas Jefferson later named him Secretary of War, a post he held from 1801 to 1809, when the young federal army was small and its leaders were still defining its role. The caption card for this steel engraving, signed by an engraver named Kilburn, records no date, so the print's exact origin is unclear. Steel engravings like this one were widely reproduced in 19th-century books and biographical collections.
