Herbert George Wells, the English novelist and author of *The Time Machine* and *The War of the Worlds*, is the subject of this 1921 studio portrait from the Underwood & Underwood firm, a New York photographic business known for its large output of press and commercial portraits. Wells visited the United States in late 1920 and 1921, when he was already a celebrated writer whose science fiction and social commentary drew wide readership on both sides of the Atlantic. The record's caption card is unverified, so the exact occasion for the sitting is not documented here, but the picture captures the public image of a figure who was then a leading voice in English letters.
