This is a studio portrait of the actor David Warfield, who was born in San Francisco in 1866 and built a long stage career in New York. Its 1897 date places it early in his rise, before he became known for his character roles under the producer David Belasco. The photograph was copyrighted by the photographer B.J. Falk, whose theatrical portraits of performers were widely sold to fans and used in newspapers and programs of the period. The record's caption card also mentions actors and tramps, though those notes are unverified and may refer to a role or a sitting rather than this portrait alone.
