William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, is the subject here, and this halftone is a 1927 reproduction of an older engraving rather than a photograph of the man himself, since he lived from 1705 to 1793. It appeared as an illustration in John M. Zane's 1927 book, The Story of Law, on page 336. Mansfield served as Chief Justice of the King's Bench in England for decades and is remembered for shaping commercial law and for his 1772 ruling in Somerset v. Stewart, which held that slavery had no basis in English common law. The record notes that the reference copy is unavailable, so the engraving's original details remain unverified.
