Digby, the second Earl of Bristol, appears in this engraving by H.T. Ryall, which the record credits to a painting by Van Dyck, though the source is marked with a question mark. Digby was a Royalist courtier and diplomat who served Charles I as an adviser and sat in the Long Parliament before the English Civil War broke out. Van Dyck painted much of the English court in the 1630s, and engravings like this one carried a sitter's likeness well beyond the palace.
