Fort Scott, in southeastern Kansas, began as a U.S. Army post on the frontier in the early 1840s, and this view of its main street shows the town as it looked in the years before the Civil War and just after. The record dates the picture only loosely, to sometime between about 1840 and 1869, and the caption card's information is unverified, so the exact year remains uncertain. Retouched prints of this kind were often made to clarify details in early photographs, so the street's buildings and wagons are worth studying for clues about frontier commerce.
