Two polar explorers stand together as the pair who led the airship Norge across the North Pole in 1926, the American financier Lincoln Ellsworth and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen. The Norge was built in Italy and flew from Spitsbergen, the Norwegian Arctic archipelago also named in the subject headings, where the expedition gathered before crossing the ice. Amundsen had already reached the South Pole in 1911, and Ellsworth's funding helped make the flight possible, so the picture records a partnership between two very different routes to polar fame.
