This photograph shows an old trading post at Walhalla, in northeastern North Dakota near the Canadian border, with the building's log construction as its most visible feature. The caption card gives 1843 as the construction date, but the record notes that this figure is unverified, so it should be read as the catalogers' best report rather than a confirmed fact. Walhalla sat on the Pembina River in the Red River fur trade, where traders exchanged goods with Métis and Ojibwe hunters, and log posts like this one were the main places where that commerce took place.
