Keams Canyon, on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona, takes its name from Thomas Keam, a trader who settled there in the 1870s. Lorenzo Hubbell's trading post was one of the houses serving Hopi and Navajo customers, where families traded woven blankets, baskets, and other crafts for flour, cloth, and manufactured goods. The caption card's notes point to weaving and trade, themes common to photographs of southwestern posts from this period. The c1905 date comes from the unverified caption card.
