The picture shows soldiers of the 10th U.S. Cavalry posed at Fort Verde in Arizona Territory, a post in the central part of the state. The regiment was one of the Army's Black cavalry units, known as Buffalo Soldiers, and in the 1880s its troopers served across the Southwest during campaigns against Apache groups and in routine garrison duty. The print is attributed to Edgar Alexander Mearns, an Army surgeon and naturalist who was stationed in Arizona during those years and photographed the posts where he served. Its date, between 1884 and 1887, comes from the caption card and is not precisely established.
