Fort Bliss, in El Paso, Texas, is the subject here, and this card-backed photograph was made as a postcard, a format that was hugely popular in the early 1910s. Fort Bliss had been an Army post since 1854 and by these years was a key base on the Mexican border, a period when American troops were stationed in the region during the upheavals of the Mexican Revolution. The date given is only a estimate from the caption card, so the exact year is uncertain. Postcards like this one were often sold to soldiers and visitors as souvenirs of military life on the frontier.
