Set on the hills above the Bosporus, the Imperial Cavalry Barracks at Yildiz stood within the palace grounds of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1909. The print is by Abdullah Frères, an Istanbul studio whose brothers worked for the Ottoman court and recorded its palaces and military installations. Made as an albumen print between 1880 and 1893, it comes from an album in the sultan's collection now held by the Library of Congress, and it shows how the court chose to present its military strength.
