Seen from the water, the Selimiye Barracks sits on the Üsküdar shore of the Bosphorus, across from the old city. The Ottoman army has used the complex since the late eighteenth century, and during the Crimean War it housed the British military hospital where Florence Nightingale worked. The photograph was taken by Abdullah Frères, a Constantinople studio whose views were widely sold, and it appears in an album of Istanbul sites that also includes firefighting equipment, hospitals, and factories. That mix offers a picture of the city's public institutions in the years before 1893.
