Taken at the front of the Imperial Military Academy in Constantinople, this albumen print records the school's main facade in the years between 1880 and 1893. It came from Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio run by the Abdullah brothers, which was known for city views and portraits made for the Ottoman court. The print is one of a group in an album of imperial military and medical schools, assembled as part of the collection associated with Sultan Abdul Hamid II, whose reign saw a strong push to modernize army training. Its French caption reflects the language widely used in Ottoman official and diplomatic circles of the period.
