The picture shows the Imperial Ironclad Corvette *Avn-i Ilâh*, a steam warship with iron armor that belonged to the Ottoman navy. Its caption, in Ottoman Turkish and French, identifies it as the work of Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople studio of the Abdullah brothers, who were well known as photographers to the Ottoman court. The print comes from an album in the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, which records the naval life of the Ottoman capital and the Black Sea lifesaving stations. Armored corvettes like this one marked the shift from wooden sailing fleets to ironclad steam navies, and the Ottoman government invested in such ships during the late nineteenth century.
