Few photographs of the late Ottoman navy show the inside of a warship, which makes this view of the stern cabin of the *Hamidiye* unusual. The ship was an armored frigate named for Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and its officers' quarters at the stern were where rank and display mattered most. The print was made by Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio of the Abdullah brothers, who were among the city's best-known commercial photographers in the 1880s and early 1890s. It belongs to an album of imperial naval subjects assembled for the sultan's collection, which was meant to present a modernizing Ottoman fleet to visitors and to the court.
