The display case holds the swords attributed to Sultan Mehmed II, Sultan Selim I, Bayezid II, and a blade associated with Constantine, the last Byzantine emperor, whose inclusion signals how the Ottoman court valued relics of its conquests. The photograph was made by Abdullah Frères, the Istanbul studio that produced many views of the imperial collections for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, and it is one of the numbered images in an album documenting the Topkapı Palace treasury. Such pictures recorded the palace's holdings in the 1880s and early 1890s, when the sultan was building his image as heir to Ottoman and Islamic traditions.
