Taken at the Mecidiye Barracks in Pera, now part of Istanbul's Beyoğlu district, this view centers on the building's facade and its doorways, with soldiers among its subjects. The Abdullah Frères studio, a well-known photography firm in Constantinople, made it as one of 50 numbered views in an album covering the Imperial Guard, the War Ministry and military barracks. The album later became part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, and it shows how the Ottoman state chose to present its army to outside viewers in the late nineteenth century.
