Set in Üsküdar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, this view shows the open courtyard of the Selimiye Barracks, enclosed by the complex's long walls. The barracks date to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and during the Crimean War the site became widely known as the British military hospital where Florence Nightingale worked. The print was made by the Abdullah Frères studio in Constantinople between about 1880 and 1893 and belongs to an album of fire brigade equipment, barracks, hospitals, and factories from the Abdul-Hamid II Collection.
