Sürat, a bay Arabian mare, is the subject here, and her name appears in the caption along with the photographer's studio, Abdullah Frères of Constantinople. The Abdullah brothers were prominent commercial and court photographers in the Ottoman capital, and their albumen prints were often sold to visitors and assembled into albums. The picture belongs to a group of views of horses at the Imperial Stud Farm near Istanbul, made during the reign of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who was known for his enthusiasm for Arabian horses. Sultans' stables were a point of imperial pride, and images like this one recorded both the animals and the state's interest in breeding them.
