Honoring the Warren Guards of Warrenton, North Carolina, and Capt. B.O. Wade, this sheet music cover shows how a local militia company became the subject of popular music early in the Civil War. Quick steps like this one were printed as Southern towns raised volunteer companies, and units often wanted their names on the sheet. A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, a busy lithography firm, produced the image, and the copyright was held by Henry McCaffrey. It is worth a close look as a record of how a small-town company presented itself to the public at the start of the war.
