The Russian title, roughly "Yurt of nomadic Kyrgyz. The Hungry Steppe," places the scene in the Betpak-Dala, a dry, sparsely watered expanse in what is now central Kazakhstan. Its name has long been rendered as the "hungry steppe." The subject is a yurt, the round, felt-covered dwelling that herding families carried across the grasslands, and the record's emphasis on doors and doorways draws attention to the low entrance, where a single opening shapes daily life inside. The small album print, about 8 by 8 centimeters, dates from between 1905 and 1915, a period when Russian administrators and survey photographers were documenting the peoples and landscapes of Central Asia.
