The arched entrance to the Uspensky monastery in Ples is the focus of this small photograph, which shows the gate leading into the monastery grounds. Ples is a modest town on the upper Volga in what is now Ivanovo Oblast, and in the late nineteenth century it drew painters, most famously Isaac Levitan, whose river landscapes helped make the town familiar in Russian art. This 8 by 8 centimeter view, mounted in an album and dated to about 1910, captures a provincial religious site at a time when such places were becoming subjects for travelers and collectors.
