Day, a Boston photographer who posed for this scene himself, staged it as a Resurrection tableau in 1898, when he was working on religious subjects with tightly controlled lighting and staging. Its platinum print process, favored by pictorialist photographers in the 1890s, gives the image deep, velvety blacks and soft gray midtones. Day was part of a circle of Boston artists and writers, and the Louise Imogen Guiney Collection, which includes this print, preserves a link to that literary milieu. Viewers today often notice how the staging borrows from religious painting while the medium itself insists on the photograph's own handmade character.
