Christ crowned with thorns is one of the round scenes in Lucas van Leyden's *Circular Passion*, a series he dated 1509, when he was only about fifteen. The plate bears his monogram and date, but the outer edge has been cut away, so the circle is clipped at its margin. Working in fine engraved line, Lucas packs the Passion's episodes into small, compact compositions. He went on to become one of the most admired printmakers of the early sixteenth century, and his prints circulated widely across Europe.
