Among the Mantegna engravings in Adam Bartsch's catalog, this sheet carries the number 1, which makes it a natural starting point for anyone studying the artist's printed work. It shows Christ bound to a column during his scourging, a scene drawn from the Gospel accounts of the Passion that Renaissance artists returned to often. A collection mark for Franz Rechberger, dated 1799, records one of the sheet's earlier owners before it reached the Library of Congress in 1876. The catalog card lists the engraving as "by or after" Mantegna, so its exact attribution remains open to specialists.
