Little is recorded about Mattie Edwards Hewitt beyond her name, which survives on the caption card that accompanied this portrait. The print belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, assembled by a photographer who worked in Washington, D.C., and made a large body of portraits and documentary images around the turn of the twentieth century. Dated somewhere between about 1890 and 1910, it reflects a period when studio portraiture was becoming widely available to ordinary families. The notations on the card, including the tracings "B.I." and "Ph. Ind.", are worth noting for researchers tracing how the image was catalogued.
