Billiards champion Willie Hoppe appears in this portrait from about 1910, when he was among the sport's most recognized players. He first won the world balkline title in 1906 and held major championships for decades, and his reputation rests on steady, long-running excellence more than on any single famous match. The photograph is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied press photographs of public figures and sporting events in the early twentieth century.
