Rembrandt's 1634 etching of the angel appearing to the shepherds shows the Gospel of Luke scene in a dark, open landscape, with the angel's light breaking over the startled figures on the ground. Rembrandt often reworked his copper plates, so the same image survives in several states, and this impression is the third. Its record notes a collector's mark and an earlier owner, both signs of how prints passed between private collectors before entering public institutions. Rembrandt's etchings of biblical subjects like this one were widely admired and copied in his lifetime.
