Signed with his initials on the plate, this Annunciation is the work of Martin Schongauer, the German engraver from Colmar whose precise line shaped printmaking in the late 1400s. Its verso bears the collection marks of Henry Brodhurst and George Lothrop Bradley, and the monogram watermark helps trace the sheet's path into American hands. The scene shows the angel Gabriel greeting the Virgin Mary, a subject Schongauer treated with great care and that Albrecht Dürer later studied closely. The catalog date of [14--] is incomplete, so the exact year of printing remains uncertain.
