Rembrandt's etching of Abraham holding his son Isaac in a close embrace is a small, intimate study of a scene from Genesis 22, where Abraham is told to sacrifice Isaac. Here the moment is quiet and tender, with the father's arms around the boy rather than the knife or the altar that other artists emphasized. The record dates the print to about 1638, a period when Rembrandt was producing many etchings of biblical subjects, working the copper plate with a needle to build fine lines and shading. This is a first state impression, so collectors comparing it with later printings can look for changes Rembrandt made to the plate.
