Captioned in French as the "Cathedrale of Saint Isaac at St. Petersbourg," this salted paper print shows the church that Auguste de Montferrand designed and that was consecrated in 1858, after roughly four decades of construction. Its gilded dome and granite columns made it one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Russian imperial capital, and the photograph dates from the years just after it was finished. The print is kept in an album assembled by Benjamin Brown French, a Washington official and collector whose photographs record places and people from the mid-nineteenth century.
