Beggars gather on the steps of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg, the Neoclassical church whose gilded dome dominated the city's skyline. Designed by the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand and completed in 1858, the cathedral drew worshippers, tourists and the poor alike, and asking for alms at church doors was a long-standing part of Russian life. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news and documentary photographs made in the early twentieth century, so it offers a glimpse of street life in the imperial capital in the years before 1917.
