Carved above a doorway in the sacristy, this view shows a smaller piece of ornament rather than the cathedral's famous west front or stained glass. Saint-Étienne in Bourges, in central France, was begun around 1195 and built largely within a few decades, giving it a unity of design unusual for a cathedral of its size. Its sculpture is often cited as a fine example of early French Gothic. The caption card gives no date, so when this photograph was made is uncertain, but its subject ties it firmly to the building's medieval fabric.
